The eyelids are prone to sagging as part of the aging process. John R. Barbour, MD, FACS, is a triple board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon offering blepharoplasty for men and women in the Washington, DC area, including Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and surrounding communities in Virginia.
What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a procedure that removes pockets of fat and loose skin from the upper and lower eyelids. The fat and skin cause the upper eyelids to look puffy, and the extra weight makes the eyelids droop over the upper portion of the eyeball. Men and women who have this cosmetic issue often discuss how their eyes always feel tired and heavy, even when they are well-rested. The lower eyelids may also hang down to reveal the soft pink tissue below the eyeball. This may increase the chances of developing eye infections, and it gives the person a fatigued appearance.
What are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?
- Gives the eyes a more alert appearance
- May reduce eye fatigue
- May decrease the risk for eye infections
What is the Procedure for Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty for the upper eyelid involves a small incision made along the natural crease of the eyelid. Dr. Barbour removes any small bits of fat and pulls the skin taut before closing the incision. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision may be made along the lower lash line. The excess fat and skin are removed, and Dr. Barbour closes the incision.
What Should I Expect After Eyelid Surgery?
Your eyes are covered with bandages after the procedure, so someone will need to take you home. Bruising, swelling, dry eyes and mild pain are common symptoms after eyelid surgery. Healing can take a few weeks, so we recommend you have someone available to help with daily tasks.
Is the Cost of Blepharoplasty Covered by Insurance?
Depending on the situation and the type of insurance eyelid surgery may be covered by medical insurance.
