John R. Barbour, MD, FACS, is a triple board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon offering Botox® treatment for men and women in the Washington, DC area, including Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and surrounding communities in Virginia. Botox® is an anti-aging minimally-invasive treatment for wrinkles in the upper portion of the face.
What is Botox®?
Botox® is classified as a neuromodulator. The injections temporarily relax the muscles in the forehead and brow area that cause wrinkles on the skin. Known as dynamic wrinkles, the lines in this area of the face are unique because they form when the muscles contract. As the skin loses elasticity due to aging, it is unable to withstand the pressure of the muscles and creases to form wrinkles.
What is the Difference Between Botox® and Xeomin®?
Botox® and Xeomin® are in the family of neuromodulators, and they’re used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet and lines in the forehead area. The longevity of the treatments was comparable in clinical studies. The key differences are:
- Wrinkle treatment with Botox® may take one to three days, whereas Xeomin® may work within one to three days
- Xeomin® contains no complexing proteins, which serve no purpose therapeutically, so it is considered a purer neuromodulator
- Xeomin® is stable for up to 36 months at room temperature, Botox@ must be stored in the refrigerator at 36º to 46ºF for up to 36 months
What are the Benefits of Botox® Treatments?
- Minimally-invasive
- No downtime
- Long-lasting results
- May delay the need for plastic surgery
- Can be used on younger and older patients

What Should I Expect from a Botox® Treatment?
Botox® is an injectable product, so it is administered via needle and syringe. The needle is very small, and you may feel a slight sensation as the needle is inserted into the muscles. Most patients are able to remain comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Barbour makes several injections in the forehead area, above the brow line and between the eyes.
You may notice a change in your wrinkles immediately after the injections, but full results may take a few days. Some patients notice minor bruising, swelling and bleeding at the injection sites. These symptoms should last only 24 to 48 hours.
How Long Do the Results Last?
In clinical studies, the results of Botox® treatments lasted four to six months, but this varies by patient. Dr. Barbour recommends maintenance treatments every four months.
How Much Do Botox® Treatments Cost?
Pricing for injectable treatments, such as Botox®, is based on several criteria that are determined during the consultation. At the end of the appointment, we provide pricing information and explain our financing options.
