A breast augmentation is one of the most requested procedures among women in the Washington, DC area, including Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and surrounding communities in Virginia. John R. Barbour, MD, FACS, is a triple board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon offering breast augmentation for women.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that enlarges a woman’s breasts. Barbour Plastic Surgery offers several options for women who want to change the size and shape of their breasts with implants.
What are Breast Implants?
Breast implants are silicone shells filled with saline or silicone. Each of these fillers has unique advantages, and Dr. Barbour helps you decide which option is best for you. Breast implants also come in different shapes, such as teardrop and round, as well as various textures. Each of these aspects will affect the way your breasts feel after the surgery.
What is Breast Implant Removal?
Some women choose to have their breast implants removed or replaced. Some of the reasons women have breast implants removed are:
- Replacement with a larger or smaller implant
- Problems with the implants, such as leakage or ruptures
- Lifetime of the implant
- Changes in lifestyle, such as starting a family
What are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation can not only give you larger breasts, but the procedure may also make the breasts rounder or correct asymmetries between the breasts. With today’s implant designs, women have numerous options for changing their breasts.
What is the Procedure for Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation (the slang version of which may be called a “boob job”) requires general anesthesia, so you should be in good health prior to the surgery. If you have health problems, Dr. Barbour may recommend you delay the surgery. Incision placement is based on the nature of the surgery and the type of implants. Common incision areas are:
- Edge of breast near the armpit
- Natural crease under the breast
- Around the areola
After making the incision, Dr. Barbour inserts the breast implant and positions it above or below the pectoral muscle. If you choose a saline implant, it is inserted just as the shell and filled with saline after it is in position.
What Should I Expect After Breast Augmentation?
You will need to limit your activities for two to six weeks to prevent shifting of the implants. Full healing from breast surgery can take several months.
Is the Cost of Breast Augmentation Covered by Insurance?
Breast augmentations are not covered by medical insurance because it is not medically necessary. Barbour Plastic Surgery offers financing for patients who are more comfortable with making monthly payments for their breast augmentation.
