What is Mastopexy?Breast Lift (Mastopexy) in Washington, DC

Mastopexy is a cosmetic procedure that changes the orientation of the breasts. After the surgery, the breast projection is forward rather than downward. Dr. Barbour may recommend a breast lift if your breasts are elongated due to the effects of aging and pregnancy. Some women have breasts that naturally sit lower on the chest, and mastopexy may help make the breasts look perkier.

What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?

After mastopexy, the breasts are lifted and may look rounder. Although a breast lift does not directly change the size of the breasts like augmentation, compressing the breast tissue does make the breasts look fuller and more shapely.

What is the Procedure for Mastopexy?

A breast lift works by removing the excess skin that allows the breasts to sag. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Possible locations for the incisions are:

  • Top of the areola
  • Around the entire areola
  • Upward from the breast crease and around the areola
  • Along the breast crease and downward from the bottom of the areola

The type of incision is based upon the amount of sagging.

Mastopexy may be combined with breast augmentation for the most dramatic improvement in breast shape.

What Should I Expect After a Breast Lift?

You will need to rest at home for at least one week. Swelling may be present for several months after the procedure.

Is the Cost of Mastopexy Covered by Insurance?

Cosmetic procedures, such as a breast lift, are not covered by insurance. We discuss the cost after your consultation, and Barbour Plastic Surgery offers financing options.
