Liposuction is typically used for double chins, but the procedure may be too invasive. As a triple board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, John R. Barbour, MD, FACS, may recommend Kybella® to men and women in the Washington, DC area, including Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and surrounding communities in Virginia.
What is Kybella®?
A double chin, also known as submental fullness, occurs when you have excess fat in the area from the underside of the chin to the top of the neck. Because double chins are largely hereditary, diet and exercise are not always adequate to tone the area. Kybella® is a minimally-invasive injectable treatment that gradually reduces the fat that causes submental fullness.
What are the Benefits of Kybella® Treatments?
- No downtime
- Treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes
- Produces no scarring
- Gradually reduces a double chin
What Should I Expect from a Kybella® Treatment?
Kybella® is administered using multiple injection sites in the submental fat. You may need additional treatments every four to six weeks for a total of three treatments to see the best possible results. In clinical studies, most patients saw a significant improvement in their double chins in about four months.
Bruising, tenderness, discomfort, redness and swelling are short-term symptoms that may develop after each treatment. These typically last two to three days.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Kybella® contains a special enzyme that targets and breaks down fat cells, therefore the cells cannot accumulate fat in the future. It is possible, though, that you may have some fat cells in the treatment area. Kybella® does not stop the aging process, so you may lose skin elasticity over time, and that may produce sagging skin in the same area.
How Much Do Kybella® Treatments Cost?
The cost of a series of Kybella® treatments varies, so we cannot provide this information until your consultation. After Dr. Barbour works with you to develop a treatment plan, we will explain the associated costs and our options for financing.
