What is Abdominoplasty?

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Washington, DC

Abdominoplasty is more commonly known as a tummy tuck. It is a cosmetic procedure that aims to fatten and contour the midsection by removing excess fat and skin and using liposuction to sculpt the remaining fat. Fat accumulates in the abdominal area due to:
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight gain
  • Genetics

A tummy tuck is not a way to lose weight, but rather a surgery that helps remove fat that is difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

Fat accumulation can occur in the area above and below the bellybutton. Some people have fat deposits only in the area below the navel. A mini tummy tuck is less extensive than a full tummy tuck and targets the lower abdomen.

What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

Your body has several types of fat, and the fat in the layers of skin, known as subcutaneous fat, is the most difficult to reduce. Sagging skin is another challenge faced by men and women who want flat abdomens. Although you may be able to reduce the fat with exercise, it could take many years, and there is no natural remedy for loose skin. A tummy tuck resolves both of these cosmetic concerns.

What is the Procedure for Abdominoplasty?

A full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck require a long incision that begins at the hip bone, follows the pubic line and ends at the other hip bone. Dr. Barbour places the incision in a manner that allows the scar to be hidden by underwear and bikini bottoms. Once the incision is made, he tightens the underlying muscles. A full abdominoplasty may require a new opening for the bellybutton. Once he is satisfied with the results, Dr. Barbour pulls the remaining skin and fat taut over the area and removes any excess before closing the incision.
