Breast Reduction Case 1
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is a type of plastic surgery with emotional and physical benefits. Women who have breasts that are too large for their bodies often experience painful symptoms, such as neck pain, poor posture, bruising and indentations from bra straps and many others. Emotionally this takes a toll on a woman, and is compounded by her feeling self-conscious about the size of her breasts.
What are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?
Dr. Barbour may recommend breast reduction surgery if you:
- Have physical symptoms caused by the size of your breasts
- Are frustrated with not being able to find bras and clothing that fit
- Feel embarrassed or uncomfortable because you have large breasts
- Find it difficult to perform daily tasks due to your breast size
What is the Procedure for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction involves removing excess fat, skin and breast tissue. The procedure is performed using general anesthesia, so you should be in good health prior to the surgery. If your breast size is related to being overweight, Dr. Barbour may recommend you lose weight. This not only makes you healthier, but also reduces the chances of needing another breast reduction procedure in the future should your weight change.
The incisions are made in locations where the scars will not be easily seen by other people. After making the incisions, Dr. Barbour removes excess tissue with a scalpel or liposuction.
What Should I Expect After Breast Reduction?
You should expect the healing process to take two to six weeks. During that time, you will need to limit your activities. You may have some mild swelling for up to six months.
Is the Cost of Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance?
Some medical insurance companies cover a portion of the cost for breast reduction if the individual experiences severe pain and other symptoms, but this is rare and varies by insurance policy. We discuss pricing and financing after your consultation.
